Buckeye State Sensory Bin

From my blog name, you can probably tell that I’m from the BUCKEYE STATE! If you don’t know, that is OHIO. Known for our weather that can bring 4 seasons in the course of a day, we are friendly, flat, and mostly farmland with a few cities sprinkled in. This Buckeye State Sensory Bin is inspired by all things Ohio!

Who is this for?

  • Young Children- Learn through play by using their senses!
  • Teachers- Use in the classroom!
  • Parents- Need to occupy your child with a little bit of sensory learning?!
  • Grown-ups- Want to keep your hands busy while doing a virtual meeting?

Why Should I Use a Sensory Bin?

There are so many benefits of sensory play! This Buckeye State Sensory bin in particular can be used for all ages (though children 3 and under should be closely monitored as this does contain small pieces). The wooden peg doll inspires imaginative play. A tiny bowl is perfect for scooping, pouring, and measuring. Bright colored beads and wooden coins are attractive and engage the senses! The soft wool balls and smooth colorful buttons allow for tactile stimulation.

What Concepts Can Be Taught?

As a parent, teacher, or caregiver, you can create learning experiences for your child with this Buckeye Sensory Bin. Here are some questions or activities that you can do while playing with your child.

  • Ask, how many red buttons can you find.
  • Tell your child to make the letter using the materials in the bin.
  • Use the materials to make a pattern.
  • Have your child fill up the bowl using the tiny spoon or scoop.
  • Ask which holds more, the scoop or bowl.
  • Encourage your child to describe the texture of the materials.

These are just some of the concepts you can encourage with this sensory bin. Older kids can use this as a break from their virtual learning and just play! Play is so vital and helps the brain learn and grow!

How Can I Create this Bin on My Own?

Books to Use

Another thing that is great to incorporate into learning centered around a sensory bin is books!

This one has beautiful pictures of animals that are from OHIO! My own children love this book by David FitzSimmons

This is another adorable book! Perfect for the youngest learners. The best part, it is a board book so sturdy in little hands!!

I highly encourage you to introduce your child to sensory play!! The benefits far outweigh the messiness and will bring your child so much joy! Happy Learning!!!

Thanks for reading!!
